While country desks were plentiful in 18th century New England, secretary desks are much less common. This secretary is one of the finest country versions. There are 14 small drawers and 6 secret compartments in the lower section and 6 small drawers and 2 adjustable shelves above. The use of raised panel "tombstone" doors is characteristic of the Queen Anne nature of this desk.

BONNET TOP SECRETARY

Country Bonnet Top Secretaries are extremely scarce, particularly desks as detailed as this one. The pattern of the bonnet, the design of the interior and shape of the ogee feet all point to its southern Massachusetts/Connecticut origin. The stepped serpentine interior is both blocked and fan carved has 22 small drawers and 6 secret compartments. The upper case is fitted with 3 small drawers, numerous pigeon holes and adjustable shelves.The raised paneled doors open to reveal 2 carved fans in the upper domed section. The bonnet is formed by bending thin sheets of pine over the bonnet frame and securing them with rosehead nails.
